During Western University’s orientation week (O-Week), new undergraduate students were welcomed into campus life and introduced to the various opportunities awaiting them. This year, during Faculty Day, the Faculty of Science left a lasting impression by showcasing the incredible resources within Western’s vibrant scientific community!
The purpose of Faculty Day is to highlight the range of science departments and opportunities available. Two major events of this day include the Sci Rally and the Department Booths.
Students had the opportunity to experience the energy and spirit of the Sci Rally, alongside the various opportunities that stem from the support of the student population through sophs, the Science Student Council (SSC), and charity initiatives. First-years were greeted warmly by the Dean of Science, Matt Davison, who encouraged the students to enjoy themselves at Western. The Head Soph team explained the valuable role sophs play as guides and resources for first-year students. Additionally, the SSC President and Executive team introduced the SSC’s contributions to the science community and pointed out the leadership positions students can apply for in the upcoming school year, such as the First Year Representative and Director of Communications. Academic advisors and the charity soph team shared how students can access academic support and participate in community service initiatives in London.
Following a lunch break on UC Hill and campus tours, the day continued in the Physics and Astronomy Upper Atrium with Department Booths showcasing several clubs and science departments. Students can get involved in clubs and departments that enrich university experience through opportunities to make new friends, and develop skills such as teamwork. The SSC booth provided information about getting involved with the council, accessing the First Year Guide, and answering any questions about the club. As advocates for the science student body to Western University, the SSC is a great way to help improve the science undergraduate experience and get involved within the science community. From volunteering within the London community to handling finances and funding, there are opportunities for any science student!
The Current, SSC’s online magazine, also interviewed first-year students about their initial experience at Western, which can be accessed here. There was even a photo booth for students and sophs alike to capture and cherish O-Week moments and liquid nitrogen ice cream as a sweet treat to enjoy.
Faculty Day was filled with exciting activities and opportunities for incoming science undergraduates. First-year students had the chance to interact with other science students, get to know Western’s science community, and kick off an academically stimulating school year by attending Faculty Day!
