Love on Screen

Love is in the air, and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a cozy movie night? Whether you're snuggled up with your valentine or enjoying your own company, here are five heartwarming and romantic films guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings.

In preparation for this article – and as a self-proclaimed romantic, I decided to take it upon myself to rewatch these movies and reflect on their timeless appeal. Settling in with a cozy blanket, and some freshly made popcorn, I set off on my Valentine’s day movie marathon.

As I embarked on my journey through the romantic classics, “10 Things I Hate About You” was the perfect starting point. Set in a high school setting, and inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, this film captured the essence of teenage romance with its witty dialogue, charming characters, and heartwarming moments. Revisiting “10 Things I Hate About You” allowed me to appreciate its timeless appeal and relive the nostalgia of adolescent love. From the captivating chemistry between Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles to the iconic prom scene set to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” every moment felt just as enchanting as I remembered. This movie was so cute, I found myself drawn to its messages of authenticity and the power of love to transcend boundaries. Despite being set in the late ‘90s, the story’s universal themes continue to resonate with audiences today, making it a true classic of the romantic comedy genre. After my rewatch, I am happy to reaffirm its place as a must-watch for Valentine’s Day. With its irresistible blend of humour, heart, and teenage charm, this film serves as a delightful reminder of the joy and magic of falling in love.

My second stop was “The Notebook” – a timeless tale about love and devotion that has captivated audiences around the world since its release. Set against the backdrop of 1940s South Carolina, “The Notebook” follows the epic romance between Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton, portrayed by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, respectively. As I delved back into their love story, I was reminded of the film’s ability to evoke a range of emotions – from headache to hope. The film’s cinematography, soundtrack and powerful performances really captivates the viewer, and draws them into a world where love knows no bounds and transcends the passage of time. Reflecting on the film’s themes of love, sacrifice, and the enduring power of memories. I found myself moved by its portrayal of the human experience – as every scene radiated raw emotion and heartfelt sincerity. After rewatching “The Notebook”, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the profound impact that true love can have on our lives. In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, this film serves as a reminder of the enduring power of love to heal, inspire and unite us all.

After watching “The Notebook”, I decided to move onto the more delightful, modern rom-com classic starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. Revisiting “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” allowed me to relive its uproarious humour and charming storyline. From Andie Anderson’s (Hudson) hilarious attempts to drive away a romantic partner, and Benjamin Barry’s (McConaughey) unsuspecting efforts to win her over, every moment brims with laughter and lighthearted fun. The film’s witty banter, endearing characters, and clever plot twists make it stand out in the romantic comedy genre. Immersed in the whirlwind romance between Andie and Ben, it is easy to be swept away by their undeniable chemistry and infectious charm. This film has themes of love, honesty, and the importance of being true to oneself. Beneath its comedic surface, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” offers a heartfelt exploration of the challenges and rewards of navigating relationships in the modern world. After rewatching this rom-com gem, I have to say it is a must-watch for Valentine’s Day.

“La La Land” took centre stage as the fourth film on my list. This modern musical masterpiece captivates audiences with its stunning visuals, mesmerising music, and heartfelt storyline. “La La Land” immerses you in the magical world of Mia and Sebastian, portrayed by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. From the opening sequence on a Los Angeles freeway, to the breathtaking dance numbers against the backdrop of a twinkling city skyline, every moment felt like a symphony of love and dreams. The film’s homage to classic Hollywood musicals combined with its contemporary setting and themes of ambition, sacrifice and the pursuit of love, makes it a truly and unforgettable cinematic experience. Watching Mia and Sebastian on their paths to success and self-discovery, I couldn’t help but be moved by their passion, determination, and unwavering love for each other. “La La Land” inspires audiences to dream big, follow their hearts, and embrace the beauty of life’s unexpected twists and turns.

Wrapping up my romantic movie marathon, we have “Crazy Rich Asians” – offering a refreshing and lavish take on the rom-com genre. “Crazy Rich Asians” transports viewers into a world of wealth, culture, and romance. The film’s stellar cast, led by Constance Wu and Henry Golding, brings the characters to life with humour, charm and depth. We follow Rachel Chu on her whirlwind adventure to meet her boyfriend’s family, getting swept up in the luxurious settings, vibrant characters and heartwarming storyline. The film explores topics of love, identity, and the complexities of family dynamics – and reminds viewers to stay true to oneself. I thoroughly enjoyed this rewatch. With its dazzling visuals, infectious energy, and heartfelt moments, “Crazy Rich Asians'' continues to inspire audiences to embrace their heritage, follow their hearts, and celebrate the rich tapestry of love in all its forms.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, let us celebrate not only the love shared between partners but also the love found in the stories we cherish. I truly hope these cinematic treasures bring warmth, laughter, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of love in all its forms.
